INTERNAL
COMMUNICATIONS
In the corporate communications position where I was employed as a Technical Writer-Producer, I worked within the company’s Career Development Department. One of our key objectives was to provide tools, training and individualized coaching to project management personnel to help them advance their careers, and, from a corporate needs perspective, develop the organization’s future leaders. Many of these employees began their careers at the company after being recruited out of college into the Career Track Partner Program, a development process utilizing standardized experiential assignments at each of the organization’s business units. Below are documents I wrote to detail corporate expectations for the Career Track Partner Program’s management.

For project management employees, successfully advancing one’s career depended in part on mastery of core competencies critical to successful project completion. To enable competency proficiency, the Career Development department identified 45 mandatory competencies, and the activities and resources to support their development. I crafted the Competency Development Documents package, consisting of a detailed how to use guide and 45 competency development documents, three of which I’ve posted below along with the user guide.

Project Management Job Descriptions were important tools for the organization’s young Estimators, Project Engineers, Superintendents and Project Managers to identify the skills, knowledge and abilities they needed to develop to take the next step in their careers. The existing documents required expansion and clarification of the Summary and Essential Duties and Responsibilities sections, plus a logical escalation of duties and responsibilities from one job title to the next. I developed boilerplate language and company culture-specific line items, then worked with the corporate Human Resources department and Legal to bring the 18 job descriptions into compliance with corporate expectations.
